After experiencing the benchmark Phillipe Starck hotels overseas, John Denton, acclaimed architect of Denton Corker Marshall, wanted to create a boutique hotel of comparative calibre in Melbourne. The site he chose was a former garment warehouse just 12 metres wide in the arts and business precinct of Flinders Lane.
The result is more than a hotel – it’s a destination in itself! The architecture and décor is spare and calm in design, yet every modern comfort in personal care is generously provided. Add a new Spa and you have the coolest relaxation pad in town.
The menu of attractions includes a glass-bottomed rooftop pool that hangs out 11 stories above the traffic below; Kevin Murphy amenities in the designer bathrooms, the ‘after 10pm’ chill-out bar of Art at Adelphi* and the very expensive - and very worth it - dining experience of Ezard’s (two hats and many awards). This is all on top of the very individualised, personal service that makes you feel as though you’re at your own private club.
The new Spa is on the same floor as the pool and boutique gym. Hiding behind iconic glass panels in the pool hallway are a steam room to entertain in or just laze in. Jets and showerheads deliver steam and spray in a variety of delightful options. Toast with sultry steam on a cold winter’s night, or lay down and let the shower of rain wash away the city stress, laugh with a friend or take time out in the watery haven for lush solitude.
There are rooms for a massage for two or a deluxe hideaway for one. Staff will delight you with Li’Tya treatments to ‘clear your field’ (energetic, that is), tantalise your senses, scrub your skin with native Australian bounty, and massage and moisturise you into a state of bliss.
Do a few laps in the pool that hangs out over the road and marvel at the fact that nothing is between you and the tops of taxis other than water, glass and a lot of thin air… sink into the steam… have a blast under a cold stream… hop on the table for a massage… before dinner in Ezard’s… and a late-night drink at Art… then retire to sleep in the coolest room in town - with beds to delight in (including probably the only ceiling with the time reflected on it, just in case you don’t feel like turning your head in the morning).
