SPA REVIEW:  As soon as husband-and-wife team Naomi and Paul Whitfeld opened the to doors to their chic lifestyle store, iKOU, two years ago, they set about planning their next venture – a luxury day spa designed to lead the ecological way. The result is iKOU Day Spa, a pristine haven of tranquility set amid the buzzy township of Leura, in the Blue Mountains.

“Many people think ‘eco’ means sacrificing and going without, but our philosophy is that eco can still mean luxury,” explains Naomi. “Our treatment beds are a perfect example – they are heated and extra comfortable but are made using bamboo, recycled metals and water-based glues.”

It’s true – the beds are extra comfortable (elegantly crafted, they’re also the best-looking treatment beds I’ve ever seen). The same goes for the plush organic cotton robes and king-sized towels. Even the bathroom falls in line with the iKOU philosophy – it features an oversized, eco-friendly Rainshower and a slatted cedar floor.

It’s no surprise to learn the Whitfelds manufacture all of their own beauty and treatment products from their the Blue Mountains studio – using solar and wind power, of course. Everything from the 100% natural-wax candles to the stylish oil burners and deliciously aromatic massage oils has been thoughtfully designed to fit in with the company slogan: ‘live the real life…’.
“Making our own products means we can guarantee ethical sourcing and production, and all ingredients we use are natural, plant-derived and high-performance,” adds Naomi.

I’m in need of a little replenishing, so Naomi suggests I indulge in the luxe Restore – Fresh from the Vine treatment, which represents two-and-a-half hours of top-to-toe heaven. Knowing you are treading lightly on the earth while you’re being pampered makes it even easier to surrender deeply into the bliss. Starting with the signature iKOU Foot Ritual, where tired feet are soaked, scrubbed and massaged back to life, also helps. 

Next up I’m lathered with a body peel before being cocooned in a silver blanket. Having my scalp massaged with a soothing oil as my body soaks up the restorative enzymes is a treat so sublime it literally sends me to sleep. I’m gently awoken, unwrapped and led to the Rainshower to rinse off and prepare for the grand finale – a Fig & Guava Oil Full Body Massage. My therapist uses her confident and intuitive touch to rub any residual stress away.

I float out the door, breathe in the fresh mountain air and resolve to experience a whole lot more of the real life!
